What Happens at Your First PT Visit at Big Cat
Walking into physical therapy for the first time is weird. You don't know if you're getting a massage, a sheet of exercises, or 45 minutes on a hot pack while somebody runs between three other patients.
So here's exactly what happens the first time you come to Big Cat, whether that's in North Canton or Twinsburg.
The short version
Your first visit is 60 minutes, 1-on-1 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Not an aide. Not a tech. We talk, we test, we figure out what's going on, and you leave with a plan and your first session of real work already done.
Before you come in
- ✓You don't need a referral. Ohio is a direct access state, so you can book with us directly.
- ✓Wear clothes you can move and sweat in. Shorts help a lot if it's a knee or hip.
- ✓Bring whatever you have: surgical notes, imaging reports, and your surgeon's protocol if you're post-op.
- ✓Bring your HSA or FSA card if you plan to use it.
Step 1: We talk (for real)
I want to know what happened, what makes it better or worse, what you've already tried, and most importantly, what you're trying to get back to. A soccer player coming back from an ACL and a dad who wants to pick up his kids without his back locking up need very different plans. Your goal drives everything we do.
Step 2: We test, we don't guess
Then we move. Depending on what's bothering you, we look at how you squat, hinge, step, jump or reach. We check strength, range of motion and what reproduces your symptoms. For a lot of athletes and post-op patients we put real numbers on it with our VALD force plates and dynamometer, so we know exactly how strong each side is instead of eyeballing it.
Part of every evaluation is also screening for anything that isn't a PT problem. If something you tell me points somewhere else, I'll tell you that day and help you get to the right person.
Step 3: You get a plan
By the end you'll know what I think is going on, what we're going to do about it, and roughly how long it should take. No vague "let's see how it goes." If we need to adjust along the way, we adjust, but you'll always know what the plan is and why.
Step 4: You start working
This is the part that surprises people. We don't wait until visit three to start rehab. You train on day one, in a real weight room and on turf, with loads that fit where you are right now. If you've read my other articles you already know my goal: most people should leave with a good sweat and a good pump.
What it costs
We're a cash-pay clinic. That's how we can give you a full hour, 1-on-1, every time. You'll know the exact cost upfront. We take HSA and FSA cards every visit, and if you want to try for out-of-network reimbursement, we'll give you a superbill to send to your insurance.
What happens after
How many visits you need depends on what's going on and what you're chasing. Some people need a handful of sessions and a solid home program. A post-op ACL is a much longer road. Either way, as you get better the sessions look less like rehab and more like training. That's the point. Rehab is just training in the presence of injury.
